Repression Recreations

Project Statement

My painting practice aims to display how I envision stories from my childhood that I have since repressed. Looking through photos and home videos is a visceral experience for me; I witness parts of my life that I don’t remember. I create pieces that show this initial reaction to these images; the paintings model the abstractions my brain creates out of my old and new memories. I often use 3D materials under the paint to place my abstraction in space. Using differing painting mediums I create thin layers to build up an image. It is the overlapping of these layers that makes the hues I envision.
